Nigerian legislators and members of the House of Representatives are pushing for changes to the 1999 Constitution that would give the country’s president and governors 6-year single tenure
Also, the 35 lawmakers known as the Reformers propose changing the 1999 constitution to allow holding all elections on the same day, proposing a 6-year single tenure, establishing two vice presidents representing Nigeria’s northern and southern regions, and for the country’s six geopolitical zones to alternate hosting the presidency.
Briefing the newsmen at the National Assembly on Monday, Ikenga Ugochinyere who spoke on behalf of the group the member representing Ideato South/Ideato North Federal Constituency, Imo State, said, “The reduction in government spending and wastage, efficiency in governance, and national stability by providing a single term of six years for the President and Governors, will go a long way in cost-cutting measures.
“Constitutional Amendment to provide that the President and the 1st Vice President shall come from the same part of the country (north or south) and the 1st Vice President shall become President whenever the President becomes incapacitated, i.e., V.P. (Succession), V.P. (Administration and Economy).”
