On Tuesday, Newcastle and Atletico Madrid reached an agreement to sign Trippier after a series of smooth and pleasant conversations.

The club will pay £12 million-plus add-ons to become the 31-year-old the first signing of the Saudi Arabia-backed regime’s new Newcastle era.

Atletico had hoped Trippier would stay, but he expressed his desire to return to England.

When Eddie Howe was in charge of Burnley, he worked with Trippier, signing him from Manchester City in January 2012 after an excellent loan spell at Turf Moor.

Newcastle United’s owners are hoping to add at least three more players this month in order to keep the team in the Premier League.

They are currently in second place in the table, two points from safety, having played 19 league matches this season.
