Rooney reveals real reason Alex Ferguson left Man Utd

Wayne Rooney, the manager of Derby County, has revealed why Sir Alex Ferguson quit Manchester United.

Ferguson ‘went out’ of Manchester United as ‘quickly as he could’ as he saw the team was in decline, according to the former striker.

Ferguson retired in 2013 after 27 years at Old Trafford, leaving a title-winning club in the hands of his successor, David Moyes.

Rooney requested Manchester United to let him leave in 2010, doubting the club’s ambition.

Ferguson and the former England striker broke out again during Ferguson’s final year at Old Trafford, when the Scot requested to go once more.

Rooney, Man United’s all-time leading scorer, was dissatisfied with the club’s decision to let Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez leave in 2009.

The Scot then helped Manchester United win two league titles in the following four years, but Manchester City were on the rise, and Rooney claims Ferguson quit United knowing they were in decline.

“Actually, five years on from that meeting, Alex Ferguson understood where the club was going and walked out as swiftly as he could, and they’re still cleaning up the pieces now,” Rooney told Metro.
