Spurs ‘mental instability’ to blame for loss – Conte

Spurs manager Antonio Conte blamed his team’s 3-2 loss to Southampton on Wednesday night on ‘mental instability’ among the group.

Mohamed Elyounoussi and Che Adams both headed home James Ward Prowse’s cross in the second half to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 victory for the Saints.

After Jan Bednarek’s own goal and a Son Heung-min strike either side of Armando Broja’s strike, Spurs were in command.

VAR also ruled off Steven Bergwijn’s stoppage-time equalizer for Spurs.

Conte has now criticized his team’s performance when they have the ball.

We must, without a doubt, be disappointed. They were good, but I believe we made numerous errors, particularly with the ball, and I believe this type of situation causes mental instability in my team.

“I have seen the two goals and we conceded two goals with the defensive line had to stay there. We need to be more accurate but I know very well that this season we are going to struggle to get three points and I said this before and I continue to repeat it.

“I believe we are improving in many areas now,” he remarked, “but we are still too emotional.”
