The United State of America, USA has on Wednesday discovered the first case of the new omicron variant of the coronavirus (COVID-19).
In a statement announced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the first case was identified in California, a state in the USA on Wednesday.
The World Health Organisation has identified the new variant of coronavirus as a ‘variant of concern’. The World Health Organisation noted that this new variant is a very high risk to the global community, this was said in the technical brief released this week.
The first case of the Omicron variant was first identified by scientists in South Africa and has since been identified in the Netherlands. Recently it has been reported by the World health organization that the omicron variant of coronavirus has been detected in twenty-three countries (23)
Maria Van Kerkhove, the COVID-19 technical lead in WHO’s Health Emergencies Programme, speaking at the news conference in Geneva on Wednesday mentioned that scientists will soon have more information about the new omicron variant, about how it spreads, and the severity of the new strain of coronavirus. Van Kerkhove said
“We expect to have more information on transmission within days, not necessarily weeks and in days in terms of the severity profile”
