Hugo Maradona, Diego Maradona’s younger brother, died in Naples on Tuesday at the age of 52, exactly a year after the Argentine football star went away, according to Italian football club Napoli.
Napoli announced on their website, confirming rumours in the Italian press that the former footballer had died of a heart attack.
The players and Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis “come together around Maradona’s family and unite with them in the agony of Hugo’s loss,” according to the club.
Hugo Maradona was an Argentine youth international midfielder who played in Italy, Austria, Spain, Argentina, and Japan before settling in Italy permanently and briefly managing amateur clubs in Naples.
Maradona, who had three children, recently ran for mayor of Buenos Aires on a right-wing list, which was defeated by the left.
Hugo Maradona joined Diego Maradona at Napoli in 1987 before being loaned to Ascoli.
The two brothers played against each other on September 20 of that year, with Diego’s Napoli coming out on top 2-1.
Diego Maradona, widely regarded as one of the all-time great footballers, died in November 2020 at the age of 60.
