President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given the finance minister and coordinating for the economy, Wale Edun 48 hours to present the new minimum wage template.
Following a meeting between the negotiation team and the president at Aso Rock on Tuesday, Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, informed State House Correspondents of the following.
He stated that Wale Edun has been instructed to calculate the cost implications of a new minimum wage template that is reasonable, sustainable, and realistic and to present the results within two days.
The minister went on to say that while the federal government is in support of raising the minimum wage, it wants to make sure that its commitments are kept.
He said, “We were all there to look at all issues, and the president has directed the minister of finance to do the numbers and get back to him between today and tomorrow so that we can have figures ready for negotiation with labor.
“Let me say that the president is determined to go with what the committee has said, and he’s also looking at the welfare of Nigerians. The government is not an opponent of labor discussions or wage increases.”
The minister said the president directed that the committee should work together to give Nigerians an “affordable, sustainable, and realistic” minimum wage.“All of us will work together assiduously within the next one week to ensure that we have a new wage for Nigeria that is acceptable, sustainable, and also realistic.”
