The Plateau State University chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU went on indefinite strike on Monday to press its demands for improved welfare and working conditions.
This is stated in a statement issued on Tuesday in Jos and signed by the union’s chairperson and secretary, Dr. Hassan Zitta and Deme Bitrus, respectively.
The union stated that the decision to go on strike was made during its Congress on Monday, December 20.
It added that the Plateau administration had failed to honor the deal it had made with the union, leading to the decision to go on strike.
According to the union’s statement, the ongoing difficulties revolve around increased insecurity around the university and non-payment of earned allowances.
The union cited a lack of accommodation for both students and faculty, as well as the need for the government to build new lecture halls, among other reasons.
