The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has vowed not to call off the one-month warning strike despite students’ protests.
The President of ASUU, Emmanuel Osodeke, President of the union, made this known while speaking on Channels TV on Monday.
According to him, the union would not call off the strike it started on February 14 because the Federal Government is making empty promises, adding that they want action.
“For the past nine years or so, they have been giving us promises but once the strike is over, they relapse. So, our colleagues are tired of these promises which they don’t fulfill. What we want is actions,” Emmanuel Osodeke said.
Speaking on if ASUU members were paid after the strike, he said:
“Anybody who says ASUU is paid after the strike, he is telling a lie. We are paid for the work done,” he said, maintaining that if the Federal Government had followed their own part of the deal, ASUU would not have gone on strike.”
He added that most schools did not miss any academic year in spite of the strike actions by ASUU, stressing that members of the union have sacrificed for the country’s educational system.
He noted that many lecturers have not gone on leave for years as they try to meet up with the calendar.
Speaking further, he stated that the union will not be moved by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) planned protest.
