Telecommunications companies in Nigeria, including MTN Group Ltd. and Airtel Africa Plc, have suspended bank recharge cards via USSD.
“Dear customer, our bank recharge channels are currently unavailable, kindly recharge using physical cards. We apologise for this inconveniences. Thank You,” the company said in a direct message to customers.
Recall that Gbenga Adebayo, chairman of the Association of Licenced Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), said in a statement released on Friday, March 12, 2021, that some Nigerians may be unable to use their bank’s USSD services, adding they owe them ₦42 billion ($102.4 million) for using the USSD platform.
For this reason, MTN, Airtel, 9mobile and other internet service providers withdrew the USSD code service.
