As the nationwide strike begins today, June 3, Nigerian workers have been instructed by the Nigerian Labour Congress to stay at home.
This was announced to the public by the organized organization this morning, June 3, in a post uploaded on its X handle (previously Twitter).
The ongoing nationwide strike was initiated because the leaders of the National Assembly and the federal government were unable to reach a consensus on a new national minimum wage and to reverse the recent increase in electricity tariffs. They claimed that the N33,000 minimum wage was insufficient to support a family in Nigeria.
Despite the Federal government’s acceptance to pay N60,000 as the new minimum wage, organized labor insisted on N497,000. TUC and the NLC later rejected the offers and withdrew from the negotiations.
Their post reads, “Victory comes by struggle, A living wage is possible. We are on strike Nigeria workers, stay at home. Yes! to a living wage, No! to starvation wage.”
