The first leg of Arsenal’s Carabao Cup semi-final versus Liverpool has been postponed.
The game was set to take place at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday, but the Reds requested that it be canceled due to an increase of suspected COVID cases in their camp.
Following that, assistant manager Pep Lijnders tested positive for a suspected positive test, prompting the club to close its first-team facilities at the AXA training site.
The authorities have now decided to cancel the match, with the first leg set to take place on January 13 at Anfield and the second leg set to take place on January 20 at the Emirates Stadium.
The EFL has been in contact with the Club on a frequent basis over the last 48 hours to determine if the match can go ahead, however major developments during that time have resulted in the Club reporting an increased number of COVID cases.
The League has granted Liverpool’s request after finding, if reluctantly, that a postponement was the only option as the Club tries to minimize the additional risk of infection amongst its team and personnel while also ensuring public health was safeguarded by not traveling from Liverpool to London.
The first leg of the match will now be played on Jan. 13 at Anfield.
