The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had appointed Augustine Eguavoen as the Super Eagle’s interim coach.
This came after the NFF terminated Gernot Rohr’s contract as coach of the Super Eagles.
A statement released by Mohammed Sanusi, the general secretary of the NFF on Sunday read in parts; “This is with immediate effect, and follows the termination of the relationship with Franco-German Gernot Rohr, who has been in charge of the three –time African champions for the past 64 months, and is Nigeria’s longest –serving manager,”
In the statement, it had been decided after a virtual meeting of the NFF Executive Committee on Sunday that, the newly appointed technical Adviser would work with Salisu Yusuf as the Chief Coach, Paul Aigbogun as the Assistant Coach, Joseph Yobo also as the Assistant Coach,Dr Terry Eguaoje as the Assistant Coach, and Aloysius Agu as the Goalkeeper Trainer.
Garba Lawal, Nwankwo Kanu,Augustine ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha, who’re former captain of the super eagle have been appointed to provide technical and ambassadorial support for the crew.”
The General Secretary of the NFF, Dr Mohammed Sanusi, as quoted in the statement commended the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports for its collaboration and guidance.
He added that “The relationship between the Nigeria Football Federation and Mr Rohr has come to an end. We thank him for his services to the Super Eagles and Nigeria,”
As the preparations for the 33rd Africa Cup of Nations which will be held in Cameroon from 9th of January to 6th of February, 2022 is in full blast, Augustine Eguavoen will lead the team until a permanent Head Coach is appointed.
He is a former Nigeria captain and has coached the team to a third-place finish at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt. When the super eagles won the Africa Cup for the first time on foreign soil in Tunisia 27 years ago, Augustine was the on-field captain for the win.
