Despite a perceived lack of firepower of Nigeria ahead of the competition, the Super Eagles were able to start their Africa Cup of Nations campaign with relative ease after a convincing victory over Egypt.
In what was a poor game for Egypt, Kelechi Iheanacho’s first-half goal, a wonderfully struck half-volley, was enough to put the Super Eagles through the Group D opener.
Moses Simon, Joe Aribo, and Kelechi Iheanacho wreaked havoc on their opponents and should have added to the score. Had his touch not abandoned him, the Leicester striker could easily have scored a hat-trick.
Even still, as spectacular as Nigeria’s forwards were, Egypt’s forwards struggled.
Given the poor service he received, it would be unjust to hold Mohamed Salah solely responsible, but the Liverpool star failed to make an impact.
Of course, Egypt will be optimistic about going to the next round, but it was Nigeria and their thin frontline that made an early statement.
